The “Extracting DNA from Fruits” workshop was successfully completed on 1 April 2023 at the Hong Kong Science Museum as part of the science program of the HK SciFest 2023. Participants learned more about the structure of DNA, they also had a chance to experience extracting DNA from goji berries and bananas under the guidance of our student instructors, Alicia Kong and Thomas So.
The “Evening Panel Discussion: Pathway in Life Sciences” has been completed on 8 March 2023. HKLSS invited Ms Lisa Cai, Director – Pivotal Life Sciences & Public Investing of Nan Fung Life Sciences, Dr Celine Chan, Chief Operating Officer of Centre for Novostics, and Dr Lydia Leung, Chief Executive Officer of Belun Technology to share their career development and discussed the prospect and career options in Hong Kong and Mainland China.

The HKLSS Mentorship Scheme 2023 Kick-off Ceremony cum Spring Reception was successfully held on 23 February 2023. The ceremony was well attended by 150 mentors, guests, mentees, and alumni. We were honored to have Mr Vincent Cheung, CEO of Nan Fung Group and Founder and Chairman of HKLSS, Mr Emmanuel Hui, CEO of Tiger Jade Pebble Accelerator, Prof Anderson Shum, President of The Hong Kong Young Academy of Sciences, and Dr Stephen Wong, Head of the Chief Executive's Policy Unit, HKSAR Government to share their perspectives on nurturing life sciences talent.
To strengthen the development of the life sciences and biotech ecosystem in Hong Kong and nurture young talents, we introduced the "Great Young Mentors" initiative in 2023. This GYM initiative pairs mentees in their first or second year of undergraduate study with HKLSS mentee/intern alums aged 30 and below. We ensure our young mentors are great enough to share their challenges and experience as young people, offering their mentees a "peer" lens to view their concerns, possible solutions, and career options. We invited 5 alums to participate in this initiative.
This year is the most significant cohort ever, we have 68 mentors, and 100 mentees joined the Scheme. We wish our mentors and mentees a wonderful mentoring journey!
