For the first time, Hong Kong Life Sciences Society (HKLSS) ran the new GBA-Shanghai Study Tour and the third cohort of the Wuxi-Shanghai Study Tour in parallel from 23 to 27 June 2026. This year, HKLSS further expanded the Study Tour footprint to the GBA to receive an intake of over 30 members, broadening exposure to regional innovation, cross-city collaboration, and translational research development.
The GBA segment featured visits to key organizations and innovation platforms in Hetao, Qianhai and Nansha, including Zhaoke Ophthalmology, Guangdong Medical Valley, Dunwell Group, Guangzhou Runsheng Cytomed Technology, the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Zone (SH-STIC), Shenzhen Salubris Pharmaceuticals, and the HKU Techno-Entrepreneurship Academy (HKU TEA). Participants are immersed in intensive talks, especially from the sharing by Dr Benjimin Li, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Zhaoke Ophthalmology; and Mr Joseph Ho, Program Director of HKU TEA. Also from a personal perspective, the candid sharing of entrepreneurial journeys, industry trends, and realistic challenges by the speakers enabled our members to gain a deeper understanding of the ecosystem and better prepare for diverse career pathways within the life sciences sectors.
Meanwhile, the welcome dinner was marked by an inspiring speech from Mr Haining Hua, Vice President of SH-STIC. The occasion offered participants the opportunity to connect with industry representatives and deepen conversations from their company visits earlier.
The tour converged with the Wuxi-Shanghai Study Tour in Shanghai, to gain first-hand insights into innovation and R&D, research commercialization, and practical experiences in industry development from global innovation leaders such as China Innovation Center of Roche (CICoR), Roche Accelerator, and AstraZeneca. First-person perspectives of Shanghai-based Hong Kong professionals were also arranged at some of the company visits. Speakers revisited their own career paths within the city's pharmaceutical and innovation sectors to showcase members the diverse development opportunities for life sciences talent in Shanghai and the Yangtze River Delta region. A dinner was held to connect members with HKLSS’ partners in Shanghai, beginning with words of brimmed with encouragement from Prof Ken Wong, Executive Director of HKLSS, and Ms Gladdy He, Member of the Advisory Board of HKLSS and Founder & CEO of Become Consulting, who motivated members to embrace the opportunities arising from the rapid growth of China's life sciences and innovation sectors and remain open to cross-border career pathways in an increasingly interconnected industry.
